Sexual & Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR)
Empowering young people with knowledge, choice, dignity, and safe spaces.
At Nzumari Community Initiative, we believe that Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Gender Justice are fundamental to the wellbeing, autonomy, safety, and future of young people. We work to create safe, inclusive, and youth-friendly spaces where adolescents and young people can access accurate information, challenge harmful norms, build confidence, and make informed decisions about their bodies, relationships, and futures.
Why It Matters
Young people make up a significant proportion of Kenya’s population, yet many continue to face challenges in accessing accurate SRHR information, safe spaces, and supportive services. Issues such as teenage pregnancies, HIV and STIs, early and forced marriages, menstrual stigma, and discrimination continue to affect the wellbeing, education, and future opportunities of adolescents and young people.
Our SRHR program uses community-based, youth-centered, trauma-informed, and rights-based approaches to address these barriers, particularly for those living in underserved communities and informal settlements. By providing safe environments, we empower young people to protect their health and understand their rights.
When young people are informed, supported, and meaningfully engaged, they are better able to make safe and responsible decisions and advocate for their rights.
Our Goal
To empower adolescents and young people with accurate SRHR knowledge, safe spaces, practical life skills, and supportive community systems that promote bodily autonomy and protection.
Our Approach
We deploy peer educators and creative storytelling to dismantle myths around SRHR and empower youth to make informed, healthy choices.
What We Do
Simplifying reproductive health concepts and providing youth-friendly safe dialogues.
SRHR Education & Awareness
We provide interactive and youth-friendly sessions on topics such as puberty, menstruation, contraception, HIV prevention, STIs, consent, bodily autonomy, healthy relationships, and self-awareness. Our approach simplifies complex SRHR concepts into relatable conversations that encourage informed decision-making and help-seeking behavior.
Safe Spaces & Youth Dialogues
We facilitate safe, inclusive, and non-judgmental spaces where adolescents and young people can openly share experiences, ask questions, and learn from one another. These spaces strengthen peer support, confidence, trust, and emotional wellbeing while promoting open and healthy conversations on sensitive topics.
School & Community-Based Programs
We work with schools, youth groups, parents, community leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen supportive environments for adolescents and young people. Our school and community engagements promote accurate SRHR information, stigma reduction, positive behavior change, and early prevention interventions.
Youth Leadership, Advocacy & Participation
We support young people to become advocates and champions for SRHR and gender justice within their communities. Through youth-led conversations, forums, campaigns, and civic engagement, we strengthen meaningful youth participation in shaping conversations, policies, and solutions affecting their lives.
Community Engagement & Social Norms Change
We engage parents, caregivers, community gatekeepers, men and boys, educators, and duty bearers in conversations that promote supportive environments, positive masculinity, accountability, and collective responsibility in advancing SRHR and gender equality.
